SMOK mod battery life, which cell powers which model
On retailer listings, a SMOK mod usually boils down to a wattage figure. That number says very little about what happens inside the chassis, where one cell, two cells or a built-in battery supply the energy. We took six models from the brand and set them against four criteria, the cell format, the energy on board, the current each cell has to deliver and the way the device charges. The question is which of them actually goes the distance.
Which SMOK mod lasts longest between charges?
The SMOK mod carrying the most energy is the Erato, because it holds two 21700 cells, or about 28.8 watt-hours with two 4000 mAh cells. Next come the two dual 18650 mods, the Morph 3 and the X-Priv Plus, followed by the Mag Solo fitted with a 21700 and the X-Priv Solo with its single 18650.
The Novo GT Box, with a 1700 mAh built-in battery, stores the least energy. Capped at 30 watts, it also uses far less of it with every puff. Real battery life therefore depends as much on the wattage you set as on the battery itself.
Six SMOK mods compared on energy
The table below lists the specifications published by the manufacturer or confirmed by two retailers. The calculated columns rest on stated assumptions, cells at 3.6 volts nominal, 3000 mAh for an 18650 and 4000 mAh for a 21700.
| Model | Power source | Maximum output | Energy on board (worked out) | Current per cell at maximum output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| X-Priv Solo | 1 × 18650 cell | 80 W | 10.8 Wh | about 22 A |
| Mag Solo | 1 × 21700 cell, or 18650 with adapter | 100 W | 14.4 Wh with a 21700 | about 28 A |
| X-Priv Plus | 2 × 18650 cells | 225 W | 21.6 Wh | about 31 A |
| Morph 3 | 2 × 18650 cells | 230 W | 21.6 Wh | about 32 A |
| Erato | 2 × 21700 cells, or 18650 | 230 W | 28.8 Wh with 21700s | about 32 A |
| Novo GT Box | 1700 mAh built-in battery | 30 W | about 6.1 Wh | not applicable |
None of the five mods with removable cells ships with batteries. Choosing them is part of the purchase, and that choice bears directly on the last two columns.
One cell or two, what each battery has to supply
The number of cells changes more than the energy reserve. It also sets the current each cell must deliver to reach the quoted output, and that figure decides which batteries are suitable.
Single-cell mods, the X-Priv Solo and the Mag Solo
A regulated mod controls its output, and the cell supplies roughly the requested power divided by its own voltage. At 80 watts on the X-Priv Solo, a 3.6-volt 18650 has to deliver about 22 amps. At 100 watts on the Mag Solo, that rises to nearly 28 amps.
The figure climbs further as the cell drains. When its voltage falls towards 3.3 volts, the same 100 watts call for about 30 amps. On a single-cell SMOK mod, maximum output is best kept for cells whose continuous discharge rating covers that value with a comfortable margin.
Dual-cell mods, the X-Priv Plus, the Morph 3 and the Erato
With two cells the load is shared. Whether the batteries sit in series or in parallel, each one supplies half the power, so about 31 amps at 225 watts and 32 amps at 230 watts.
Those peak values stay theoretical for most settings. At 100 watts, each cell in a dual mod delivers only about 14 amps, half what a single cell supplies at the same output. How to read a cell’s ratings is covered in our guide to choosing a vape battery.
The 21700, more energy for the same number of cells
A 21700 cell measures 21 mm across and 70 mm long, against 18 mm and 65 mm for an 18650. That extra volume usually brings a higher capacity. The Erato and the Mag Solo both take it, which explains their lead in the table for the same number of cells.
SMOK mod battery life, the sum to do yourself
Listings rarely quote battery life, and for good reason, since it depends on the setting. The sum fits on one line, though, and puts every model on the same footing.
Energy divided by power
Total firing time equals the energy in watt-hours divided by the output in watts. At 60 watts, a 10.8 Wh 18650 covers about 10.8 minutes of firing, or roughly 216 three-second puffs. The Erato’s two 21700s reach about 576 puffs at the same setting, ignoring circuit losses.
Output weighs as much as the battery. A dual 18650 mod pushed to 200 watts manages only about 130 three-second puffs. The Novo GT Box set at 20 watts gives around 367 from its 6.1 Wh, more than a single cell at 60 watts. The settings that stretch a charge further are gathered in our guide to vape battery life.
What the numbers leave out
These sums give a ceiling. Voltage sag towards the end of a charge, heat and cell ageing all reduce the result in practice, and two worn cells no longer hold the capacity printed on their wrap.
Charging a SMOK mod, USB-C or an external charger
The Mag Solo, the X-Priv Plus, the Morph 3 and the Erato charge through a USB-C port according to their listings, as does the Novo GT Box. Charging speed, on the other hand, is only clearly published for some of the models.
The Morph 3 and its adaptive output
On the Morph 3 product page, SMOK quotes 2 A USB-C charging and an adaptive output, with the real-time wattage adjusting automatically to the remaining charge to keep performance steady. If those 2 A apply at the 5 volts of USB, the mod receives at most 10 watts. Its two 18650s, 21.6 Wh in all, then need at least 2 hours 10 minutes to charge, longer in reality once losses and the slower final phase are counted.
Why an external charger still earns its place
An external charger checks each cell individually, which charging inside the mod does not always allow. On a dual mod it also helps keep two cells of the same model, the same age and the same charge level, the condition for sharing the load evenly. The handling rules are set out in our guide to vape battery safety.
Verdict by battery-life profile
The ranking shifts with what you expect from the device. Three profiles emerge from the figures above.
The most energy on board, the Erato
With two 21700s it carries a third more energy than the dual 18650 mods and spreads the load over two cells. It is our pick for anyone vaping at high output who wants longer gaps between charges.
The best single-cell compromise, the Mag Solo
Its 100 watts and 21700 bay give it about 14.4 Wh, a third more than the X-Priv Solo on an 18650. It does need a robust cell if you take it towards its maximum output.
The simplest to manage, the Novo GT Box
There is no cell to buy, pair or monitor. The trade-off is a battery that cannot be replaced, so its wear sets the lifespan of the device, a choice explained in our guide to built-in or removable batteries. Its Novo M pods hold 2 ml, in line with the UK cap on refillable pods and tanks, and the nicotine e-liquid that fills them is limited to 20 mg/ml in 10 ml bottles.
FAQ
These questions often come up when you first pick up a mod from the brand.
How do you open the battery compartment on a SMOK device?
Depending on the model, the bay closes with a removable cover or a sliding door. The manual shows which way it opens and which way the cells go in, and the polarity is marked inside the bay.
Why won’t a SMOK device switch on?
The usual causes are a flat cell, a cell inserted the wrong way round or a device that is simply switched off. On many mods a quick series of presses on the fire button turns it on and off, and the manual gives the exact sequence.
Does a SMOK device need a firmware update?
Some models accept an update over a USB cable, which should only be done with the tool published by the manufacturer. A device that works normally generally does not need one.
Can the cells stay inside the mod during long storage?
It is better to take them out and keep them in an insulating case, at around half charge and away from heat. Leaving a cell empty for several weeks can cost it part of its capacity.
Is a phone charger suitable for charging a mod over USB-C?
It is best to follow the manual for the model, using the cable supplied. One retailer listing for the Novo GT Box advises a low-power USB port, such as a computer’s, rather than a phone charger. A fast charger that negotiates a higher voltage will not necessarily speed things up if the device does not support that mode.
SMOK mod choice, energy on board decides battery life
SMOK mods differ less in their wattage than in what powers them. A single 18650 offers about 10.8 Wh, two 21700s more than two and a half times that, and a 1700 mAh built-in battery about 6 Wh, offset by an output capped at 30 watts.
Before choosing a SMOK mod, compare the energy on board, the current each cell must deliver at the output you plan to use and the charging method. Those three markers apply to every brand, and that battery and battery-life angle is the one Vapelith takes on vaping hardware.
